Yesterday, the GameXbar.com site was partially disabled in support of the Internet's SOPA/PIPA Blackout Protest. Full site services returned on 01.19.2012. Why? Because it is the right thing to do. GameXbar fully supports the rights of copyright and trademark holders, the protection of intellectual properties of artists, composers, creators, developers, distributors, licensors, studios and others. However the... SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) legislation is heavy-handed, overbroad, and steps beyond draconian. IP holders already have protections built into the law, this acts would allow them to side-step those laws and the costs associated with that protection. Lower costs is a good thing, but not as the expense of undue censorship and effectively being the final stake in the heart of Fair Use. Piracy is a legitimate and serious issue. Piracy does need addressed in a more effective manner, but not a draconian manner... not cause havoc on the Internet, kill Fair Use, stifle creativity and innovation, and fill the courts with barrage of infringement cases & lawsuits. Please take the time to take a look at Google's End Piracy, Not Liberty site, and Reddit's blog entry A technical examination of SOPA and PROTECT IP.
